Written
The first mode of communication here is “Written.” The written component of my class portfolio includes my group reportage on Twilight Mania, my Annotated Bibliography, my final project on The Evolution of Male Courtship, as well as my responses, and weekly Questions To Think About (QTTA.) While the central theme throughout my writing responses was the idea of courtship, love, and the reader’s reaction to the aforementioned, each writing assignment required a different approach and thought process. It is always important to consider the audience (i.e. who the piece of writing targets) and the medium of writing used to communicate the point.

"Twilight Mania" Group Reportage
The group reportage was an analytical and informative paper which explored the effects that the novel Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (and the ensuing series) had on its audience. This paper explored the fanfare, readers’ excitement, and critical responses to the first novel of what turned out to be an audience grabbing series. Research for the paper was done through video clips, scholarly articles on psychological tendencies, and through “Twilight fan sites.” Just as a news reporter would, it was important for me to be “on the scene” (via the internet websites) to fully understand the craze behind this series.Since this was an analytical paper, I wrote two drafts, focusing on content rather than writing style. It was important for me to find multiple examples for each point I made in the paper. One of the problems with my first draft was that while I had many solid points, I had not linked it back to a central idea (aka a thesis.) I ensured that such an error was rectified in the final draft. The in-depth reflection for this assignment can be found here

Final Project : Written Paper
My final project represented the culmination of all the learning and analysis that I had done throughout the year. It was an extensive paper detailing the evolution of male courtship throughout the ages. It compared and contrasted the male approach to courting a woman in the 1800s with the way a male approaches a woman in the modern world. I used a lot of research from my annotated bibliography to create a project proposal. This proposal detailed the structure of my final paper and how I would support my paper with a presentation and artifact. Once the proposal was approved, I went on to make three drafts of the paper, each time editing based on the comments of my teacher and my peers. One of the most useful things I gained from peer editing was learning how to make cohesive arguments. For example, in a segment discussing how rules in 1800s courtship relate to today, my paper had not been explicit about the modern ties to the old rules. Question To Think About (QTTA) and Response Papers
The QTTA was a weekly assignment in which I would do the assigned reading and think of an analytical question pertaining to the required reading. This was an important part of the class because it helped readers think critically about the material in question. The response papers were also a reoccuring assignment and it served the same purpose but were much deeper than the QTTA. While it was still an informal piece of writing, the response papers would help me analyze specific scenes and events in a novel. For example,in a response for the novel Twilight, I analyzed the reactions and repercussions to the male vampire protagonist, Edward, saving his love interest, Bella’s life. One of my favorite response paper I wrote was the last response paper in which we were required to analyze the effectiveness of WOVEN method of communication. You can find more details about it here. Overall these assignments were really important to the progression of my understanding of the class’ central theme.
